Immediately following his orthodontic residency, Dr. Schabel moved back to Santa Cruz and took over the practice started in 1966 by Dr. Robert (Bob) Matlack, who had treated many of Dr. Schabel's friends throughout junior high and high school. Although many changes to the practice have taken place since 1966, Dr. Schabel's dedication to providing exceptional orthodontic treatment in a compassionate atmosphere and a state-of-the-art facility has remained his top priority.
To stay progressive with the ever-changing world of technology and advances in orthodontics, Dr. Schabel regularly hosts and attends training and continuing education seminars and is the co-founder of the Paradigm Orthodontic Study Club. He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), American Dental Association (ADA), Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO), California Association of Orthodontists (CAO), California Dental Association (CDA), and the Monterey Bay Dental Society (MBDS).
Dr. Schabel’s wife, Dr. Vivian Chan, is also his partner in orthodontic practice. Together they live in Capitola with their son, Kaeden, and rambunctious boxer, Ronan, who keeps them active, whether they like it or not. Dr. Schabel is an avid Michigan football and UCLA basketball fan. He has completed several triathlons, including the California half-Ironman. Dr. Schabel finished 3rd in his age group in the Wildflower traithlon and he was a top 50 age group finisher in the Los Angeles Marathon. He also enjoys mountain biking, golf, snowboarding, and surfing.
Dr. Vivian H. Chan is a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Chan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Calgary, and achieved the highest overall grade point average in her graduating class. After completing a Master of Science degree in Neuroscience with support from several prestigious scholarships, Dr. Chan received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from New York University, where she graduated at the top of her class and was inducted into a national Dental Honor Society (Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Omega Chapter). She received her Master of Science degree in Orthodontics from the distinguished Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She presented her thesis, “The Role of Female Reproductive Hormones in the Etiopathogenesis of Temporomandibular Joint Disease in Women,” at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) International Conference in 2007. For her academic and research achievements, Dr. Chan has won numerous awards and received several scholarships at the university, provincial, and national levels.
Dr. Chan is committed to advancing her expertise in the specialty of orthodontics. She attends continuing education (CE) seminars and, along with Dr. Schabel, she hosts CE courses on a variety of topics related to treatment timing in orthodontics, Invisalign, and inter-disciplinary orthodontic treatment. She is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), American Dental Association (ADA), Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO), California Association of Orthodontists (CAO), California Dental Association (CDA), and the Monterey Bay Dental Society (MBDS).
Dr. Chan is married to Dr. Brian Schabel, and is also his partner in orthodontic practice. Together, they have a son, Kaeden, and a dog, Ronan, a boxer who has extended her puppyhood far beyond her puppy years. Dr. Chan speaks English, French, and Chinese (Mandarin and basic Cantonese) and has started learning Spanish. She started playing classical piano at the age of eight, and went on to receive her Performer’s degree from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She enjoys running, mountain biking, and great food.
Kayla has a diverse working background, from machining, retail, and banking. She has always excelled in the job opportunities that she pursued and yet none have captured her attention and admiration to make a lifelong career. That all changed when she walked into the doors of North Coast Orthodontics. The professionalism and patient driven environment of the practice immediately caught her attention and Kayla knew she wanted to be part of that atmosphere. Kayla has never been more empowered and is excited and honored to be joining the team as a clinical assistant.
Kayla’s biology background at University of California, Santa Cruz has also greatly influenced her interest in being in a medical profession, specifically in Dentistry. Kayla has obtained her certification in Infection Control and understands the importance of sterilization and proper handling of tools in medical professions. Kayla will continue her education and training to become the best assisting our patients and their needs.
Above all, Kayla is excited to help create an orthodontic experience that will not be forgotten, and be alongside patients throughout their treatment.
Kayla was born in San Jose and after schooling in Santa Cruz, she fell in love with the beach and decided to stay on this side of the hill. Kayla is very family oriented and makes the quick trip to San Jose often. She loves to run, eat, watch movies, and spend time with her eight-year-old Great Dane, Cargo.
