Dr. Brian Schabel was raised in Santa Cruz, and he attended Mission Hill Junior High, Scotts Valley Middle School and Harbor High School, where he played varsity football, basketball, and water polo. He attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a concentration in Anatomy and Physiology. Dr. Schabel obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was class president and was honored with the Board of Counselor’s Endowed Scholarship and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Award. He completed a three-year orthodontic residency at the distinguished Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Schabel’s research interests include smile and facial esthetics. Four manuscripts based on his Master’s thesis, “Orthodontic Esthetics: A Systemic Evaluation of the Smile,” have been published in prominent international orthodontics journals (The Angle Orthodontist and American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics).

Immediately following his orthodontic residency, Dr. Schabel moved back to Santa Cruz and took over the practice started in 1966 by Dr. Robert (Bob) Matlack, who had treated many of Dr. Schabel's friends throughout junior high and high school. Although many changes to the practice have taken place since 1966, Dr. Schabel's dedication to providing exceptional orthodontic treatment in a compassionate atmosphere and a state-of-the-art facility has remained his top priority.

To stay progressive with the ever-changing world of technology and advances in orthodontics, Dr. Schabel regularly hosts and attends training and continuing education seminars and is the co-founder of the Paradigm Orthodontic Study Club. He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), American Dental Association (ADA), Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO), California Association of Orthodontists (CAO), California Dental Association (CDA), and the Monterey Bay Dental Society (MBDS).

Dr. Schabel’s wife, Dr. Vivian Chan, is also his partner in orthodontic practice. Together they live in Capitola with their son, Kaeden, and rambunctious boxer, Ronan, who keeps them active, whether they like it or not. Dr. Schabel is an avid Michigan football and UCLA basketball fan. He has completed several triathlons, including the California half-Ironman. Dr. Schabel finished 3rd in his age group in the Wildflower traithlon and he was a top 50 age group finisher in the Los Angeles Marathon. He also enjoys mountain biking, golf, snowboarding, and surfing.
